“ADHD I want to be amazing at this, or I’m not doing it” - yes!! That's what put me off so much. I'm so glad I get to work with you (I can't believe I'm over 3/4 the way through my first draft, thanks to YOU!), and follow along with what else you learn.
I often struggle to remember (anything) that my brain tricks me in this specific way. And that actually the only way past it is to do the thing. Ugh. But then you are a master at doing 'the big scary thing' so I think I probably learned it from you!
Cheering you on! I too, have had a book idea kicking around for years and years but I've never quite managed to pull together what it's about. I'm currently in the "struggling to even call myself a writer" phase, and am sort of fumbling my way onto substack by posting a mix of old bits of writing that I can find lying around my studio and blog-style updates on what I'm working on now. It's all a bit chaotic, but I find that's where I tend to thrive.
Yes, you're a writer - doesn't matter where or how you're writing or sharing it, or how often you're doing it, you're doing it! Am definitely stumbling on here too, but looking forward to playing in this new sandbox. It feels supportive, right?
I resonate with so much of this and also applaud your use of the phrase “gets my hackles up”
